Charles was 58 when injured in May 2003. He sustained loss of his left arm below the elbow and a re-plant of the left thumb onto his injured right hand. Therapy elsewhere had offered no real progress, resulting in depression and the feeling that he couldn’t do anything. His wife, Doris, recognized her husband "back again", after his first session at CFL. With their help, he achieved total independence, and about 2 months after finishing the program he bagged his limit for turkeys!
"Sandy had lots of experience in dealing with injuries like mine, so she knew what she needed to do to get me back to where I could live a reasonably normal life. She got my body prepared to be able to wear the new prosthesis when I got it. And when I got the prosthesis, she trained me how to use it. Now I’m able to hunt turkeys, deer, duck, and even fish, although the reel is still a little difficult for me.
"When you are seriously injured, you think the world has come to an end. The day I first went to Sandy's for an evaluation, I walked in the door and there was Hector Torres with his left arm gone. I looked in the back, and there stood a young man with his left arm gone. And I thought — well, look here; things can’t be all bad. I’m not the only one!
"My goal was to have my prosthesis by December, and Sandy agreed to try to prepare me for it. I got my prosthesis on the 30th day of October. Sandy and I together — we did it."
| "Sandy immediately spotted a problem with his shoulder that required further hospital treatment," Doris adds. "That extra procedure helped to straighten out his shoulder so he could lift his arm higher. She was great, she really was. And her attitude will definitely have an effect on you — she's very positive."
